Telescope Observing

Telescope Observing

Join us at the Observatory for public stargazing every Tuesday night after sunset (weather permitting) where our student volunteers set up telescopes to observe the night sky.

No ticket or reservation needed—just bring your curiosity.

Before you come, be sure to check the announcement banner at the top of the website for the most up-to-date information or cancellations, as well as our calendar for planning purposes.

General Guidelines for Public Observing

  • Dress warmly - Wear layers and comfortable clothing, prioritizing warmth and practicality, as you might be exposed to cooler temperatures and may need to move around for viewing. Consider a jacket, a hat, and gloves, even in milder weather.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes - This is a safety precaution, especially when moving around in the dark.
  • Avoid bright lights - Cell phone screens and flashlights can interfere with other people’s vision and disrupt the observing experience.
  • Maintain quiet - Noise can be distracting, especially during sensitive observations.
  • No flash photography - In areas designated as dark zones, flash photography is prohibited to preserve night vision.
  • Respect equipment - Avoid touching or moving telescopes or other equipment without permission.
  • Follow staff instructions - Observatory staff are there to guide and assist visitors, so it’s important to follow their directions.
